Queer Physics
The unified theory of gravity and desire.

Queer Physics is a simultaneous explanation of the inner workings of both gravity and homosexual desire. Used as a running metaphor for one another they are more effectively explained at once than separately. The title is an obvious reference to “Jewish Physics” a derogatory term coined by the Nazis to dismiss Einstein's theory of relativity. A unified theory of gravity and homosexual desire requires a rejection of straight preconceptions in order to appreciate a more dynamic universe where like can attract, empty space can repel and three or more is not necessarily a crowd.

Queer Physics, director Leif Harmsen morphed with muse Issac Newton

This movie will be  in the same queer science class as Electrical Discharge (1 min, 1999), the short out film that I directed with Greg Woodbury in which Benjamin Ramsay and I use only our bodies and an acrylic carpet to demonstrate that shocking property of matter.   Queer Physics will, however, be more accomplished and more... mature.   The formal aspects will be more similar to The Bedroom Suite Trilogy (9 min, 2003) with cut-aways to cruising men, computer animations and public domain footage from 20th Century high school science class films.  There will be a science/nature movie narration which will make sense both as a theory of gravity and a theory of homosexual desire to anyone with a basic understanding of relativity and sexual attraction. For those who can't follow the physics, it will remain an amusing science-lecture mambo-jambo which can still provide a deeper understanding of homosexual desire.  For those who can't follow the homosexual desire, they might nonetheless appreciate an enlightening perspective on the wonderful physical universe we share.

There will be a component shot in low budget film , for a decidedly 20th Century high-school aesthetic, but the lion's share of footage will be shot in the now ubiquitous HD for a contemporary 21st Century look and feel.  The sound track which will include my narration will be, I hope, produced by Chandra Bulucon of Puppy Machine Productions under my direction. And in an ideal universe Bob Wiseman compose and record the theme music.  Original diagrams and diagrammatic animations will be developed by myself on a computer using standard open source software that has been developed for that purpose. The narration will be recorded using the Charles Street Video audio booth. Footage of men in space, feeling attraction, students in the classroom during a science movie etc. will be shot variously on Super-8 and HD video. The final high resolution 16:9 production will be assembled and finished at Charles Street Video.
