I directed TORAANISQATSI (5 min, 2006, Super-8) by invitation to Splice This! Festival's "Remake" programme where it received a standing ovation. After seeing the film there, Bob Wiseman was inspired to compose and record the amazing original soundtrack which was added before the movie's official release. The 5 minute environmental epic is my "remake" of Koyaanisqatsi, shot entirely from my bicycle in Toronto, Canada on Super 8 film. Distributed by CFMDC.
The subtitle of Koyaanisqaatsi was "Life out of Balance", but 25-some years on now I think we can afford to be more honest about our increasingly bleak situation. I saw the original movie of a god's-eye view of America - god being the ultimate outsider. Anyone detached from petty immediate concerns would see the epic tale unfold of human industry expanding to the point where it suffocates itself with its own exhaust and engulfs itself in its own flames.
